CONTENTS OF THE DROP-DOWN FOR NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS (NGOs)

INTRODUCTION:

The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Branch was established in the Federal Ministry of Education to interface between the Ministry and NGOs, that is; the Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) and other Civil-Society Organizations (CSOs) intervening in the Education Sector and Education Experts and Professionals in the Diaspora so as to implement the National Policy of Education in Nigeria.

FUNCTIONS OF THE BRANCH

The functions of the branch are:

  1. registering and recognizing collaborating NGOs intervening in any area of the Education sector;
  2. registering and recognizing NGOs for National and International Partner’s technical and financial assistance and intervention in the Education sector;
  • collaborating with registered NGOs in the implementation of their programmes that are relevant to the education sector;
  1. sensitizing NGOs on the need to assist government in the implementation of government policies and programmes on education;
  2. creating awareness among the public on government reform programmes through the NGOs;
  3. collaborating with the Education experts and professionals in the diaspora; and
  • harnessing the human and capital potential of the diaspora as resources for the development of the education sector.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE REGISTRATION OF NGOs

All NGOs seeking recognition or collaboration of any form with the Ministry are expected to register with the Ministry first before their requests are considered. In doing this, the NGOs are expected to forward the following documents to facilitate their registration and recognition:

  1. a formal application for registration addressed to the Honourable Minister of Education;
  2. evidence of payment of a non-refundable fee of Twenty Thousand Naira (₦20,000) only in bank draft payable to Federal Ministry of Education: Registration of NGOs e-Collection;
  • a detailed profile of your organization;
  1. a copy of certificate of incorporation with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC);
  2. a copy of letter of registration as an NGO operating in Nigeria with Ministry of Budget and National Planning;
  3. a copy of minutes of inaugural meeting where the executive members were elected;
  • a Certified true copy of your organization’s constitution/memorandum of article;
  • names and addresses of the board of trustees/directors;
  1. your organization’s source(s) of funding;
  2. proposed activities for a year;
  3. evidence(s) of previous year activities; and
  • specific area(s) of intervention in the education sector.

A mandatory pre-registration visit to the organization’s Head Office would also be made by officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to verify the organization’s claims and mandate.

Upon meeting the requirements listed above and a satisfactory pre-registration visit, the organization would be registered as a collaborating NGO with the Ministry. The registration is valid for two (2) years, of which they are expected to:

  1. submit report of activities bi-annually; and
  2. submit annual plan for the year every January;

RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION

The organization is to renew their registration every two (2) years and the requirements are as follows:

  1. formal application for renewal of registration addressed to the Honourable Minister of Education;
  2. evidence of payment of a non-refundable fee of Ten Thousand Naira (₦10,000) only in bank draft payable to Federal Ministry of Education: Registration of NGOs e-Collection for renewal of registration.

LIST OF REGISTERED NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS

Since the establishment of the NGOs Branch in the Ministry, quite a number of organizations were registered. In 2017, however, the registration requirements were reviewed. This review invalidates all previously registered NGOs with the Ministry. Such NGOs are advised to re-register for effective collaboration.
